It’s not called getting old, it’s called getting ill

That’s the theme of the current Alzheimer’s Society campaign, highlighting the first signs of dementia and the support available if you, or a family member is worried about memory loss.

This hard-hitting subject matter has resonated with members of our LOVELIVE team following our recent blog, in which our very own Kim Collier shared her story of how this terrible disease affected her family, and, how this September she’s taking on The Great North Run to raise funds.

Another member of the team whose family is regularly involved in fundraising is our Presentations Designer, Becky Newton.

My loving grandad is currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Vascular Dementia after receiving his diagnosis in 2013. He has always been a very fun, caring and dedicated family man, who would always be there for you and make you laugh! I have very fond memories of family holidays together and day trips, or even just sitting together with a brew and biscuits in the later few years looking at family pictures.

He was a practical and talented joiner willing to take his hand to anything, so watching these skills deteriorate over time was heartbreaking to see.
As a close-knit family, to process the news and the subsequent changes has been hard, so we channeled a lot of this into fundraising, to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society to help tackle the cruel disease.

Over the past 10 years we’ve run events, memory walks and charity evenings where support was overwhelming, as it affects so many families. It’s not just a part of getting old and although awareness has increased over the past few years, a lot can still be done so one day we can find a cure. The work the Alzheimer’s Society does to support people living with Alzheimer’s Disease is amazing.

In an Alzheimer’s Society survey, three out of five people with dementia wish they had got a diagnosis sooner. So, on the ‘run’ up to Kim’s half marathon at the Great North Run on Sunday 11th September we’ll continue to share stories from the LOVELIVE team to help raise awareness, and hopefully help smash her target!
